Bowater Mersey Effluent Treatment

This $28.8 million project included the design and implementation of an effluent treatment system for the Bowater Mersey Paper Company Limited in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. It was undertaken by Bowater Mersey to comply with new federal guidelines for paper mill effluent.

To reduce effluent flows, the project included a number of conservation projects within the mill. The nominal flow is about 9mgd. The main treatment processes consist of primary clarification and biological treatment using aerated stabilization basin (ASB) technology. Primary clarification is achieved in a 100-foot diameter reactor clarifier. Sludge from the clarifier is dewatered using a rotary screen thickener and screw press before disposal.The ASB is a two-cell aerated lagoon with a total volume of about 100 million gallons. Air is supplied to the ASB from three 300-Hp centrifugal blowers.

The project included a low-lit pumping station equipped with three 2,600-gpm, 60-Hp, variable speed pumps. The high-lift pumping station was provided with three 4,000-gpm, 350-Hp, variable speed pumps. The high-lift pumping station delivers clarified effluent to the ASB through 5km of 800 mm HDPE forcemain.

Cavendish Farms Wastewater Treatment

CBCL Limited was retained to develop preliminary designs and cost estimates for an expansion to the wastewater treatment facility at Cavendish Farms.  The existing plant contains unit processes consisting of primary clarification, anaerobic pre-treatment, aerobic biologic nutrient removal, secondary clarification, sand filtration, UV disinfection and wetland polishing.  Primary solids are dewatered by centrifugation and used for animal feed; anaerobic and aerobic biological sludges are dewatered with a belt filter press prior to land application.

Although major expansion on the site has not occurred, several upgrades have been required to maintain discharge requirements as yearly processing volumes continue to increase.  In the summer of 2000, CBCL Limited provided detailed design services for several upgrades to the existing aeration and denitrification system.  Aeration upgrades were designed to provide an additional 20% of oxygen transfer to the bio-mass utilizing the existing blowers and denitrification upgrades were designed to provide an additional 3,000gpm of recycle flow.  An on-line nitrogen analyser was also selected and installed during this project.
