Marine Infrastructure

CBCL Limited is a large multidiscipline consulting firm that benefits from having all disciplines necessary to undertake a complete project from start to finish. For example, CBCL Limited has a highly qualified materials handling team which provides engineering services for bulk handling marine terminals as well as a mechanical division with experience in design and construction of large-scale bunkering plants for vessel fueling.

CBCL Limited's resource pool of engineers and technical staff have a wide variety of structural, marine, and environmental design expertise and experience which contributes to the delivery of cost effective solutions to an expansive array of engineering challenges. With our diverse resource base, we can offer a variety of services such as wave/climate analysis, modelling, coastal engineering, and design and construction related services for the following types of Projects.

Ferry Terminals

Marine Atlantic ProjectMarine Atlantic operates a ferry line between the Province of Nova Scotia and the Province of Newfoundland. This line has three terminals; one (1) in North Sydney, Nova Scotia and two (2) in Newfoundland (Port aux Basques and Argentia).

This Marine Atlantic Transformation project was a $100 million (CAD) rehabilitation of the three terminals, which involved dock upgrades; transfer bridge construction and repair; new LEED Passenger Terminal Building employing current technology in intelligent transportation; upgrades and addition of marshalling yards; upgrades to terminal infrastructure including water and sewer; electrical upgrades and lighting including shore power for vessels. CBCL executed a full EPCM contract for Marine Atlantic, which including over 50 construction projects within a four (4) year window.

Bulk Terminals

CBCL Limited executed an EPCM contract for a new bulk handling terminal at Point Tupper Nova Scotia for NSPI to receive coal to fuel two (2) coal-fired generating stations. The project included a marginal wharf capable of receiving cape size bulk and panama self-unloader vessels. The materials handling system included a movable hopper on the dock that utilized a wharf conveyor, an inhaul conveyor and an elevated shuttle conveyor to build 140,000 tonne coal stock piles. In addition, the dock was outfitted with a specialized E-Crane to offload bulker vessels. The Project also included an environmental pad for coal storage, coal pile run off collection and treatment and environmental controls for dust mitigation. The value of this project, from concept to completion, was $34 million (CAD) with construction completed in just under 12 months.

Oil and Gas Terminals

Oil and GasCBCL Limited supplies EPCM services to oil and gas marine terminals. Most notably to Nustar Statia Terminals, Strait of Canso, Nova Scotia. This terminal has the largest capacity on the Eastern Seaboard of North America to receive the largest supertankers in the World. It is a receiving, storage and transshipment facility for petroleum products. CBCL has been providing services to this terminal for over 20 years. Also in the Strait of Canso, CBCL Limited is in the process of completing the design for the new terminal to ship out LNG worldwide.

Offshore Supply Bases

OffshoreCBCL Limited recently completed the design for a new offshore supply base to service offshore drilling rigs in the North Atlantic. The design included a three (3) berth marginal wharf, heavy lift pads and all the infrastructure for an offshore supply berth, including storage and piping systems for drilling muds, potable water supply, systems to receive wastes from rigs, shore power, electrical infrastructure and security systems. CBCL worked closely on this project with vessel operations and logistic companies that supply the offshore.

Fishing Harbours

FishingCBCL Limited has been supply EPCM services to Public Works and Government Services Canada, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours. Projects have included fishing wharves, coastal and harbour protection, structures, dredging of channels and related wharf infrastructure such as water and power Supply.

Recreational Marine Facilities

RecreationCBCL Limited supplies services to boating and recreational clients. Services have included design and construction of marinas, including fixed structures, floating docks, potable water supply, fueling, waste removal and shore based infrastructure, such as yacht club buildings.

Cruise Ship Berths

CruiseCBCL Limited supplies EPCM services for the construction of cruise ship terminals, including construction of dock design, channels, berth protection and shore based infrastructure such as gangways, potable water supply, waste removal systems and shore-based power.

Container Terminals

ContainerCBCL Limited has been working for Ports Canada Corporation since 1981 when CBCL designed for a second container facility in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Currently CBCL is involved in the new Container Terminal Project in Sydney, Nova Scotia. This project has included dredging, aids to navigation, a fisheries compensation program, long term CDF monitoring and container terminal options review.
