Laboratory Buildings

CBCL Limited has provided multidiscipline engineering design and construction services for a variety of laboratory projects. Our clients include higher education institutions, federal and provincial government organizations, and crown corporations. Laboratories present a unique set of challenges for buildings services engineers. Structural engineers often need to consider vibration criteria for sensitive laboratory equipment. Mechanical and electrical engineers must consider laboratory safety for users and neighbours, energy efficiency and robust long-term operation of components in an inherently corrosive environment. CBCL Limited has professionals experienced in the successful design of the complex systems used in hundreds of thousands of square feet of teaching and research laboratory buildings that contain hundreds of chemical fume hoods, clean rooms, perchoric acid hoods, hydrofluoric acid hoods, chemical storage facilities and vivarium spaces. Systems include constant and variable volume ventilation systems and fume hoods as well as heat recovery systems. Our professionals undergo continuous professional development to stay abreast of advances in laboratory systems, standards and codes. We are familiar with the recommendations of the US organization “Labs for the 21st Century” and have provided review comments on the recent draft version of the LEED® application Guide for Laboratories.

Our approach to laboratory design puts user safety first and foremost while maintaining appreciation and consideration for user flexibility as well as operation and maintenance costs. A design consideration for user safety considers not only the day-to-day laboratory users, but also visitors and neighbours to the building. Our engineers can assist other professionals such as architects, laboratory planners, cost consultants, dispersion modeling experts and laboratory users to come up with efficient laboratory layouts that optimize and balance the sometimes conflicting requirements inherent in laboratory buildings.
